HOUSTON – U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao, Co-Chair of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, met with local Asian-American leaders at an event hosted by the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) in Houston. 

“This roundtable reflects the WHIAAPI mission and the importance of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to our country,” U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao said. “Throughout my career, I have promoted the Asian Pacific American community’s contribution to mainstream America and fought for more opportunities for our community.”

Secretary Chao was joined by Dr. Paul Hsu the Chairman of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, as well as Commissioners Jan-Ie Low, and Herman Martir. Secretary Chao and the local and national leaders discussed infrastructure investment and developing transportation innovations as well as economic growth and job creation. 

The top three priorities of the U. S. Department of Transportation under Secretary Chao’s tenure are: Safety is always number 1; The second priority is rebuilding and refurbishing our country’s critical infrastructure. The third priority is to prepare for the transportation systems of the future by engaging with new technologies to address legitimate public concerns about safety, security, and privacy, without hampering innovation.

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) and the President’s Advisory Commission on AAPIs (PAC-AAPI) work to broaden access by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) employers and communities to economic resources and opportunities, thus empowering AAPIs to improve the quality of their lives, raise the standard of living of their families and communities, and more fully participate in our economy.

趙部長與亞太裔美國人總統顧問委員會主席徐紹欽博士以及委員羅簡樂和赫爾曼·馬蒂爾一起參加了會議。趙部長與當地和國家領導人討論了基礎設施投資，發展交通創新以及經濟增長和創造就業機會等議題。

 

在趙部長的領導下，美國交通部三項優先重點事項為：1）安全始終是第一位； 2）重建和更新國家主要的基礎設施。 3）在不妨礙創新的前提下解決公眾對安全，保障和隱私的合理關注，通過採用新技術為未來的交通系統做準備。

 

白宮亞太裔美國人倡議計劃和總統顧問委員會致力於擴大亞裔美國人以及太平洋島民的雇主和社區獲得經濟資源和機會，從而使亞太裔能夠改善其生活質量，提高家庭和社區的生活水平，並更充分地參與到我們的經濟活動中。

 

趙小蘭部長宣誓就職擔任美國勞工部長之時便成為美國歷史上首位被任命為總統內閣成員的亞太裔女性。美國交通部長是其第二任內閣職位。

 

趙部長在公共、私營和非營利部門都有著傑出的職業生涯，她從未忘記自己的根。八歲時移民來到美國，不會說任何英文，19歲時，她獲得美國公民身份。作為初來乍到美國的移民，在新的國家適應成長的過程激勵著她，用其大部分職業生涯致力於確保每個人都有機會為自己和家人創造更美好的生活。

 

為了幫助亞太裔美國人和傳統上被忽視的社區在美國主流社會獲得更多的機會，趙部長發起了許多倡議計劃。她推出了年度美國亞太裔聯邦職業發展峰會和年度就業機會大會。同時在她擔任勞工部長之時，部門勞工統計局實行了一項歷史性舉措，開始分類報告美國亞裔的就業數據。她指示部門將重要勞動法規翻譯成包括中文，越南文和韓文等多種亞洲語言，以幫助亞裔社區了解相關資訊。

 

在擔任美國勞工部長之前，趙部長曾任美國聯合勸募協會的總裁兼首席執行官，在財務管理不善和濫用行為招致協會名譽受損之後，她幫助該協會重塑形象，恢復公眾對該組織的信任和信心。在擔任和平團主任之時，趙部長在波羅的海國家和新獨立的前蘇聯加盟共和國中建立了第一批項目。

 

在其公共職業生涯的早期，她在白宮從事交通運輸事務。之後，她還擔任了美國交通部海事局副局長、聯邦海事委員會主席以及美國交通部副部長。

趙部長擁有哈佛大學商學院工商管理碩士學位。由於其在公共服務領域取得的諸多非凡成就，她還獲得36個榮譽博士學位。

她是趙錫成博士和已故夫人趙朱木蘭女士六個女兒中的長女。
